National Day of Mourning

National Day of Mourning – Tomorrow (April 28)
Tomorrow, on Tuesday, April 28, 2020, we remember the workers killed or injured on the job as we observe the National Day of Mourning.

“Our enduring message is to mourn for the dead and fight for the living,” says Canadian General Vice President Stan Pickthall in his video address to IAM members.

This year, as we contend with COVID-19, our remembrance and the actions we take to hold our employers to account, to ensure the safety of all workers, is more important than ever.

“We know that many workers during this COVID-19 crisis have been deemed essential and are going to work,” says Pickthall. “Our healthcare heroes, grocery heroes, and all the other heroes who are doing their jobs every day to make sure we’re safe. We need to make sure they have the proper protective equipment and that employers are doing everything they must do to ensure their safety.”

On Tuesday, please take part in one of the many virtual Day of Mourning events or hold a private vigil. Together, let’s honour those who have lost their lives and stand with essential workers, as we call on our employers and government to do more.

IAM Distric 78 Arbitration Award

Arbitration Award
This good news is from late last year, but we think it’s worth sharing. IAM District 78 arbitrated a Local 3111 members grievance. The grievance concerned whether a member, Bilan Arte, had a right to receive transportation expenses, as defined in the Collective Agreement. After hearing the case, the Arbitrator found in favour of the IAM, and resulted in the grievor being entitled to over $6,500 in expenditures. IAM Representative Jim Snider stated that, “this was a big win for Bilan and for Local 3111. The Local committee refused to settle for anything less than what Bilan was entitled to.”
